SURFACES GROUP SETS NEW. RECORD |
|
Donita Gottsch, Bill Gayer, Walter Weddle and Louise Tolander work In first shift Surfaces, and it is their job to assemble ailerons.
When they reported for work one day last week, without any prearrangement they decided to see how quickly they could assemble one, Ordinarily it takes about 24 hours to do the job. When the five o'clock bell rang eight hours later, they had a completed aileron on their jig, setting a record that will be one to shoot at. Ailerons, made up of numerous sub-assemblies which make up the main assembly, are one of the control surfaces that help guide the ship in flight, and to assemble one requires a great deal of skillful and precise work. These four had what it took when they set their record. This time, however, is not to be taken by the department as a standard time, but it shows what can be done when extra effort is put forth. The group has only been in the department several weeks, and before coming to Martin-Nebraska had never worked on aircraft. |
