Background:

James B. Story was one of the first copilots in the 69th Squadron, 38th Group. His diary covers the period June 2, 1942, when his flight took off from Hamilton Field, California for Hickam Field, Hawaii, through August 3, 1943 when he returned to the States.
During his tour in the Pacific, Jim became a first pilot, transitioned in the B-25 and saw action in the Guadalcanal area in both the B-26 and B-25. The archival holdings of this diary are held in four different formats:

1. The diary itself; 4" by 5.5" leather bound with clasp titled "Five Year Diary." This is held at the Pima Air and Space Museum (PASM) in the Archive Section. A photo of the diary and the flyleaf is available in this internet document as Diary

2. A 52 page transcript of the entries typed by James. B. Story. A Xerox copy of this is held at the PASM.

3. Graphic scans of all entries in the diary. These 134 scans, most of two pages each, have been made by Richard P. Ellinger and are computer stored as Photoshop documents at the PASM. Scans of the first three pages are contained in this Internet document. These can be accessed as Diary scans

4. An OCR (optical character recognition) scan of a Xerox copy of the 52 page Transcript. An index of names contained has been added with reference to the typed page numbers. This is held at PASM as a 233K MacWord Pro document and is contained in this Internet document as OCR text

Or a PDF copy (192 K) of this OCR scan can be downloaded

Also, PDF copies of these graphic scans can be downloaded. Because of size, these are provided as 6 separate PDF files:
