While I was at Camp Roberts, I had gotten a little box of water colors. I had no art instruction except that offered in public schools from about grade 1 through 6 or 7. I wouldn't consider it much instruction however. The nice thing about it however was the little box of water colors took up little space and wasn't heavy. Both of those items were not only desireable but essential. I really didn't do anything with them until I got to Sioux Falls. I did some sketches with pencil and fewer with water colors. This is a copy of one such effort that I called Company Alley. To be correct, it should have been Squadron Alley . The size was 11" x 14".The building to the left was the back door of my barracks. The smaller building towards the right side was a shower and latrine. The large building at the end was one of the mess halls. All these buildings were heated with coal so there was a lot of coal smoke drifting across the camp. The buildings were black tarpaper---they didn't show the coal deposits..
