The cities, towns and villages looked like the heavens on a clear starry night. The lights however didn't conform to any constellation that might have been seen from the planet earth. The lights were almost hypnotic. Also on that first night flight, I looked out my little radio room window and saw a red hot exhaust. Dick assured me that it was normal---we were not on fire. Night flights were also special in another way. Usually, I would have gone over to the P.X. and loaded up with candies, cookies, snacks of all sorts including fruits. I or we had an aerial picnic.

Our training continued into November and December. I rather anticipated that we could be in Europe before the end of the year. We were called out to have our "official crew photograph'' made in December. There we were all trained and ready to go.

Earlier in November, my folks knowing that it would not be long before I would ship out, planned a visit to Shreveport and Barksdale to have a pre departure overseas visit. Thus my mother, my dad, sister, brother and brother in law came down for a visit. They were there for several days. Dick's mother also came down at that time to see him off. As I recall, we all had rooms in a local motel. Mrs. Zorn wondered if we were on a farm as cows were outside her window one morning. My folks returned to west Texas and we wrapped up our training. We learned that we were to go to a base near Savannah, Georgia.

In the early to mid 90's, I sought to re-establish contact with members of the crew by way ot last known addresses. I reamed from Dick that Walt had died several years earlier. Walt s son, born after the war, had been looking for information relative to his Dad's time in the service. Dick had given him copies of the pictures that he had.
