| Between early March 1945 and V-E Day, May 8, 1945 I flew 23 missions, Dick flew 22. Our comments written on the date of the mission avoids problems of memory. I have not located my diary, thus the only record that I have is the brief summary as recorded in my photo album to identify the bomb strike photos. Those notes were transposed from my diary. My first description of a mission occurs on March 19, 1945. It was my 6th mission, one past my Air Medal mission. I shall use one type/font for my comments and a different one for Dick's narration. The numbers preceeding each mission are Dick's mission numbers. #[Monday ~ March, 1945

#2 W33-35 P.35 The mission ot March 9, 1945 was either to bomb the marahalling yard at Biebrich or the defended towns ot Lich, Schwalbach, Eppenrod, Anspach, or Lippstadt I used a chest type parachute. It fully attached, it was bulky and cumbersome so I stowed it next to my right leg on the floor so l could grab it in a hurry. The flak was heavy and accurate. I was looking at the flight below us and to the left When I looked back at the flight below us and to my right nothing was left ot one ot the planes except the tumbling tail section and the sections ot the wings out past the engines (continued to the top ot page 36) |
