| We were headed for Ausburg [125 guns ~ We turned off aboul; two
miles out of range of their guns. That's plenty close by air. We were
4,000 feet up and I sure did ~weal it out Flight~ from the 97th
~quadron [497th ?) got beaucoups of 40 mm flak on the way out We
didn't know exaclly when we cro~ed the bomb line out We flew
over the Mosel valley and Trier. It really was bear; up. Tanks all over
and trenches and pill boxes. We were at 1,800 feet when we passed
over Luxembourg Wall'~ relations home. We could see the people
looking up at ua. We gof back about 12 o'clock. All went well with us.
Some fligh~ caught hell. No losses. We brought bombs back.
The Cavillot family in Florennes had a standing invitation for Bill and Me, that we were to come in every day that we were not flying a mission. They shared their food with us. I would consider them to have been middle class. They owned their home, it had a small garden space and I saw for the first time fruit trees pruned in "Espalier" form. In addition, they like most of the other residents of the town, had a garden spot out side the town limits, about a miles walk. Their plot had a small shed to store their tools. Along the roadway wild poppies were blooming and I remembered "In Flanders field where poppies grow, between the crosses row on row"----- W54-56 P 54 |
