| Besancon was a big town' developed on both sides of the river. The river circled around three sides. The dormitory where I stayed is at the lower right hand corner of the photo. The bridge to the immediate right was the one we crossed each day to attend classes. The large square building with a courtyard was a prison and VD ward. The women inmates were housed upon the 3rd or 4th floor and would shout and wave to us as we passed. Again with the Zoology professor and the "Hook"l am in the back under the word L'ETAT.
While I was in Paris I wanted to visit the Louvue especially to see the Mona Lisa, Whistlers Mother, and the Winged Victory, The first three on my list were a mild disappointment. The two paintings were tiny. The Venus de Milo was fat, but Winged Victory more than made up for all the others. I suppose that I was attracted to it because of the winged thing. The way that it was exhibited was a demonstration in usage of white space. She stood there all alone at the top of a flight of stairs in front of a smooth white marble wall.
By this time October,15, 1945 a lot of the museum pieces that had been moved away to keep them from the German looters were being returned and placed on exhibit. The ceremonial swords all encrusted with diamonds and other precious jewels were again on display. The sculpture gallery was in the process of being set up. There was a sculpture of a nude lady reclining on a mattress.! supposed that she had been placed on the mattress to avoid damaging it. I went over to test the softness and found that it was a part of the sculpture. How can they make it look so real? Yes I enjoyed my short visit to the city of lights but Germany was calling.
