| I went to the train station for transportation to join up with the 344th Bomb Group. I didn't know exactly where it was, but I knew it was close to Munich. I do not recall how long the trip tookbut I arrived in Munich in the early evening. I called the base for transportation . While I was waiting I went into one of the small cafes in the station. It was rather busy. There were several German men talking to each other and I would have sworn that they were speaking English but when I tuned them in fully they were 100% German. Up until then I had never given a thought as to the similarity in the sounds. OOPS!
I failed to insert the picture taken out at the Palace of Versailles. I am the one standing in the back row in front of the pedestal supporting Good old Louis 14, so we will just put it here.
I arrived at our base which had been a German airfield. I was assigned to a barracks that was permanent, much like those at Barksdaie. There were 3 or 4 of us assigned to a largo room. We had tall lockers to store our uniforms and personal goods. We had central heat which was a blessing after the tents of Pointoise and Florennes. The German Air Force were elite and we appreciated inheriting the remnants of their former life style. The nearest town was Schlessheim but there was another town much closer, in fact it was contiguous to the base and it has a name that is far more recognized. It was Dacheau. From my barracks I could see the chimneys and the smoke stacks. I did not wish to go over and see what Hitler and his crew had wrought. Some of the former prisoners were still in the area and some were working for the U.S. in one capacity or another. W75-77 P.77 |
